Help us celebrate our FIFTH annual DRUM NIGHT!

This year, we are pleased to announce two very special guests from Toronto: World-renowned South Indian mrdangam player TRICHY SANKARAN, and his daughter, autorickshaw vocalist SUBA SANKARAN. The evening will be hosted by KEN SHORLEY, who will also perform a short opening set.

Trichy Sankaran (mrdangam, kanjira)
Trichy Sankaran is a world-renowned percussion virtuoso, Indian music scholar and composer. He has performed at major festivals in India, South-East Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. In his more than 50 years of concert experience in Karnatak music, he has accompanied all top rank artists of India. In addition to traditional settings, he has performed with gamelan, jazz, electronic, African, and world drum ensembles. While representing his famous guru Sri Palani Subramania Pillai’s style, Vidwan Sankaran has given new dimensions to the art of mrdangam, thus making his style traditional yet innovative. Professor Sankaran is the Founding Director of Indian Music Studies and Professor of Music at York University in Toronto, Canada, where he has been teaching since 1971. His numerous recordings include Laya Vinyas (1990) – solo performances on mrdangam and kanjira; Sunada (1993) – classical Karnatak repertoire, with K. Subramaniam (vina); and Lotus Signatures (1997) – classical Karnatak repertoire, with Dr. N. Ramani (flute).

Suba Sankaran (voice, vocal percussion)
Suba Sankaran’s musical career began at an early age studying South Indian classical music with her father, master drummer Trichy Sankaran. She graduated from York University in 1997, where she studied jazz, and completed her Master of Arts degree in ethnomusicology in 2002. Suba regularly performs with world music ensembles autorickshaw and Trichy’s Trio. Suba has performed across Canada, the US, Europe and India with a wide range of artists including Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana (Global Divas), chittraveena player Ravikiran, David Mott, Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan, George Koller, Kevin Breit, Maza Meze, award-winning a cappella jazz group Hampton Avenue, and the Nathaniel Dett Chorale.

Ken Shorley (darabuka, frame drums, jawharp, gongs)
Ken is a percussionist and composer who specializes in hand drumming from the Middle East. He performs as a soloist, an accompanist, and with the world fusion group, Talambra. In addition, Ken teaches rhythm and drumming through his school, i rhythm, and at Acadia University.
