About DRUM NIGHT

Each spring, World in Wolfville presents Drum Night, an evening of dynamic world drumming artists and ensembles from Nova Scotia and beyond - hosted by hand drummer and percussionist Ken Shorley.

DRUM NIGHT (8th annual)
Friday, April 1st, 2011 - 8 PM

This year's concert will feature a rhythm-centric convergence of six flying hands and three rhythmic minds! Two fabulous musicians will be joining Ken this year for an exciting and dynamic trio show - Ade Suparman from Indonesia, and Mark Duggan from Toronto.

Join us at Drum Night, and set the groove for spring!

Ade Suparman

Ade is a master musician from Bandung, West Java (Indonesia) who is touring the US and Canada in the spring of 2011. He is a virtuoso on several traditional Sundanese instruments, including kacapi (plucked zither), kendang (barrel drums), and gambang (xylophone). In addition, he plays and composes for the popular Sundanese percussion ensemble known as gamelan degung.

Ade has been a member of professional folk and classical music groups in Bandung, performing on Kacapi and Gamelan. He has recorded Sundanese traditional and contemporary music with well-known composers in West Java.

His travels abroad have taken him to India, South Korea, the Netherlands and the USA. While in the Netherlands, he performed as a kacapi soloist in Utretcht and Den Haag, and also taught Sundanese music in Stichtings Kunskring Siliwangi-Panglipur. He also teaches regularly in Bali for the San Diego-based Center for World Music.

Mark Duggan

Mark is a contemporary percussionist and composer with a wide range of skills in various musical disciplines. His creative work often explores the cross-fertilization and meeting points of these different genres and aesthetics.

Mark has been active in the Canadian music scene for many years as both performer and composer. Working with such groups as the Evergreen Club Gamelan, the percussion ensemble Nexus, or his own latin jazz group Vuja Dé, Mark's versatile blend of world and contemporary percussion has impressed audiences from the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and Festival de Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville, to the Lincoln Center in New York.

Duggan performs regularly around the Toronto area with the Esprit Orchestra, the National Ballet Orchestra, New Music Concerts, and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra. He is a regular performer at the Scotia Festival of Music and is a founding member of the Evergreen Club Gamelan (since 1983) which over the years has performed throughout Canada and internationally in Europe, Asia and the US.
